What is Forex Trading?
Forex (Foreign Exchange) is the global marketplace where currencies are bought and sold. It's the largest financial market in the world, with over $7.5 trillion traded every single day. That's more than the stock market, bond market, and crypto market combined.
When you trade forex, you're buying one currency while simultaneously selling another. Currencies are always traded in pairs โ like EUR/USD (Euro vs US Dollar) or GBP/USD (British Pound vs US Dollar).
Here's the beautiful part: the forex market is open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. It doesn't close like the stock market. Whether you're in Lagos, London, or Los Angeles, you can trade at any time that suits your schedule.
๐ก Simple Example
Imagine you believe the Euro will strengthen against the US Dollar. You buy EUR/USD at 1.0800. If the price rises to 1.0850, you've gained 50 pips of profit. If you traded 0.1 lots (a mini lot), that's approximately $50 profit. If you traded 1.0 lots (a standard lot), that's approximately $500 profit.
Key Terms Every Beginner Must Know
๐ What is a Pip?
A pip (Percentage in Point) is the smallest unit of price movement in forex. For most currency pairs, 1 pip = 0.0001. For pairs involving Japanese Yen (like USD/JPY), 1 pip = 0.01.
When EUR/USD moves from 1.0800 to 1.0810, that's a movement of 10 pips.
๐ฐ Pip Value by Lot Size
Standard lot (1.0) = 100,000 units โ approximately $10 per pip
Mini lot (0.1) = 10,000 units โ approximately $1 per pip
Micro lot (0.01) = 1,000 units โ approximately $0.10 per pip
๐ What is a Lot?
A lot is the standardized quantity of currency you trade. Think of it as a "package size." As a beginner, always start with micro lots (0.01) โ this way, even if you lose 50 pips, you only lose about $5 instead of $500.
๐ What is Spread?
The spread is the difference between the Buy price (Ask) and the Sell price (Bid). This is how your broker makes money. A typical spread on EUR/USD is 1-2 pips. Lower spreads are better for you as a trader because you pay less to enter each trade.
๐ What is Leverage?
Leverage allows you to control a large position with a small amount of money. For example, with 1:100 leverage, $100 in your account controls $10,000 worth of currency.
โ ๏ธ LEVERAGE WARNING
Leverage is a double-edged sword. It amplifies both your profits AND your losses. A 1% move against you with 1:100 leverage means you lose your entire deposit. Always use leverage carefully and with proper risk management.
๐ Buy (Long) vs Sell (Short)
Buy (Long) โ You profit when the price goes UP. You believe the base currency will strengthen.
Sell (Short) โ You profit when the price goes DOWN. You believe the base currency will weaken.
๐ Stop Loss (SL)
A Stop Loss is a pre-set price level where your trade automatically closes to prevent further losses. It's your safety net. NEVER trade without a stop loss. This single rule will save your trading career.
๐ Take Profit (TP)
A Take Profit is a pre-set price level where your trade automatically closes to lock in your profit. It removes the temptation to hold too long and give back your gains.
๐ Break Even (BE)
Break Even means moving your stop loss to your entry price once the trade is in profit. This means even if the market reverses, you lose nothing. It's a powerful way to protect your capital.
| Term | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Pip | Smallest price movement | 1.0800 โ 1.0801 = 1 pip |
| Lot | Trade size | 0.01 = micro, 0.1 = mini, 1.0 = standard |
| Spread | Broker's fee (buy-sell gap) | 1-2 pips on EUR/USD |
| Leverage | Borrowed trading power | 1:100 = $100 controls $10,000 |
| Stop Loss | Auto-close to limit loss | Set 20 pips below entry |
| Take Profit | Auto-close to lock profit | Set 40 pips above entry |
| Break Even | Move SL to entry price | Risk-free trade |
Understanding Currency Pairs
In forex, currencies are always traded in pairs. The first currency is the base currency and the second is the quote currency.
| Type | Examples | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Major Pairs | EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY | Most traded, lowest spreads |
| Minor Pairs | EUR/GBP, AUD/NZD, GBP/JPY | No USD, moderate spreads |
| Exotic Pairs | USD/ZAR, EUR/TRY, USD/NGN | High spreads, volatile โ avoid as beginner |
| Commodities | XAU/USD (Gold), XAG/USD (Silver) | Very volatile, high reward & risk |
| Crypto | BTC/USD, ETH/USD | 24/7 market, extreme volatility |

The forex market is open 24 hours but is divided into four major sessions. Each has different characteristics. Knowing when to trade is just as important as knowing what to trade.

Moderate volatility
JPY pairs active
๐๏ธ London

โญ Best Time to Trade (Olado FX Tip)
The London-New York overlap (1PM โ 5PM GMT) is the most active period with the tightest spreads and highest liquidity. This is when most professional traders โ including at Olado Forex Academy โ take their best trades. For Gold traders, the New York session is where the biggest moves happen.
Risk Management โ The Most Important Skill
Risk management is more important than any strategy. You can have the best entries in the world, but without proper risk management, one bad trade can wipe out your entire account.
The 1-2% Rule
Never risk more than 1-2% of your account balance on a single trade. If your account is $1,000, your maximum risk per trade should be $10-$20. This means even 10 consecutive losing trades only cost you 10-20% of your account โ you survive and can recover.
Risk-Reward Ratio (R:R)
Always aim for a minimum 1:2 risk-to-reward ratio. This means if you risk 20 pips, your target should be at least 40 pips. With a 1:2 ratio, you only need to win 40% of your trades to be profitable.
๐ Example: How R:R Works
You take 10 trades, risking $20 each (1:2 R:R).
You win 4 trades: 4 ร $40 = +$160
You lose 6 trades: 6 ร $20 = -$120
Net profit: +$40 โ even with only a 40% win rate!
Position Sizing
Position sizing determines how many lots you trade based on your account size and stop loss distance. Use this calculator:

โ ๏ธ RISK WARNING โ PLEASE READ
Forex and Gold trading carries significant risk. 70-80% of retail traders lose money. Never trade with money you cannot afford to lose. Always start on a demo account. Past performance does not guarantee future results. Olado Forex Academy provides education โ trading decisions are your own responsibility.
Choosing a Broker โ Where You Trade
A broker is the platform that connects you to the forex market. Choosing the right broker is critical โ it affects your spreads, execution speed, and the safety of your money.
What to Look For in a Broker
โ Must-Have Features
Regulation โ Only use brokers regulated by FCA (UK), ASIC (Australia), CySEC (EU), or FSCA (South Africa). Regulation protects your funds.
Low Spreads โ Especially important for Gold trading. Look for raw/ECN accounts with spreads from 0.0 pips.
MT4 or MT5 Support โ These are the industry-standard platforms. Both work with Expert Advisors (trading robots).
Fast Withdrawals โ Your broker should process withdrawals within 24-48 hours.
Leverage Options โ Look for 1:100 to 1:500 leverage depending on your experience.

For Gold (XAUUSD) trading with our Smart Gold Trading AI robot, we recommend ECN or RAW accounts with low spreads. Exness and IC Markets are both excellent choices. If you're using a robot/EA, you'll also want a VPS (Virtual Private Server) for 24/5 uptime โ we help you set this up after purchase.
Reading Charts โ Candlestick Basics
Candlestick charts are the most popular chart type in forex. Each candle tells you four pieces of information: the Open, High, Low, and Close price for a specific time period. Understanding candles is the foundation of ALL price action trading.
๐ Anatomy of a Candlestick
Every candle has a body (the thick part) and wicks/shadows (the thin lines above and below).
๐ข Bullish Candle (Green)
The price closed higher than it opened. Buyers were stronger than sellers. The body shows the distance price traveled upward. The longer the body, the stronger the buying pressure.
๐ด Bearish Candle (Red)
The price closed lower than it opened. Sellers were stronger than buyers. The body shows the distance price traveled downward. The longer the body, the stronger the selling pressure.
๐ What the Wicks Tell You
Long upper wick = Sellers pushed price back down. There's resistance above.
Long lower wick = Buyers pushed price back up. There's support below.
Short wicks = One side dominated with little fight from the other.
Equal wicks = Market was undecided โ watch the next candle for direction.
Key Candlestick Patterns โ Visual Guide
These patterns appear on charts every day. Learning to spot them gives you a major edge in predicting what price will do next.
Bullish & Bearish Engulfing Pattern
The most powerful reversal pattern. The second candle completely "engulfs" (covers) the first candle's body.
Hammer & Shooting Star
Single-candle reversal patterns. The wick is at least 2x the size of the body.
Doji & Pin Bar
Indecision and rejection candles โ watch these carefully at key price levels.
Quick Reference โ All Patterns
| Pattern | Signal | What to Look For | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bullish Engulfing | Strong buy | Green candle fully covers previous red candle | BUY โ |
| Bearish Engulfing | Strong sell | Red candle fully covers previous green candle | SELL โ |
| Hammer | Bullish reversal | Small body + long lower wick (2x body) at bottom | BUY โ |
| Shooting Star | Bearish reversal | Small body + long upper wick (2x body) at top | SELL โ |
| Doji | Indecision | Open โ Close, thin or no body | WAIT for next candle |
| Pin Bar | Reversal | Very long wick, tiny body โ rejection | Trade the rejection direction |
๐ก Pro Tip from Olado FX
Candlestick patterns are most powerful at key levels โ support, resistance, order blocks. A hammer in the middle of nowhere is weak. A hammer at a major support zone? That's a high-probability buy signal. Context is everything.
Market Structure โ Uptrend vs Downtrend
Understanding market structure means knowing the direction of the market. This is the FIRST thing you should identify before placing any trade.
๐ Uptrend Structure
Price makes Higher Highs (HH) and Higher Lows (HL). Look for BUY opportunities.
๐ Downtrend Structure
Price makes Lower Highs (LH) and Lower Lows (LL). Look for SELL opportunities.
Range/Consolidation โ Price moves sideways between support and resistance. Neither buyers nor sellers are winning. Wait for a breakout before trading.
๐ฏ The #1 Rule of Market Structure
In an uptrend โ ONLY look for BUYS.
In a downtrend โ ONLY look for SELLS.
Trading against the trend is the fastest way to lose money. The trend is your friend โ always.
